Xiaoping Zhu is a Professor and Chair at the University of Maryland (UMD). He received his training in Veterinary Medicine, Pathology (M.S.), and Virology (Ph.D.) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Zhu completed his postdoctoral training in immunology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Before joining UMD, he was a junior faculty member at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on developing novel mucosal vaccines and immune therapeutic strategies for significant inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. His work is continuously supported by funding from the NIH, USDA, philanthropic donations, and other funding agencies. Zhu has received several outstanding research awards and holds eight U.S. patents and patent applications. He has authored more than 60 original publications in immunology and infectious diseases. Additionally, Zhu is an active reviewer for numerous scientific journals and serves as a grant reviewer for the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the USDA. His research led to the establishment of Transmucosis, a startup spin-off from UMD. Transmucosis works with various partners to advance nasal vaccines for preventing respiratory infections into first-in-human clinical trials.
