Peter Kofinas received his B.S., M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) prior to his faculty appointment at the University of Maryland in 1996. His research involves functional polymers for a variety of technological fields ranging from medicine and pharmaceutics to energy storage and microelectronics. Kofinas is the recipient of numerous awards including an NSF CAREER Award, the Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars Program Mentor (UMD, 2014-2015) award, and the Faculty Outstanding Research Award (UMD, 2012) and Service Award (UMD, 2013). Formerly an Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Programs for the Clark School and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering, Kofinas became the Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2017.
