Katie Shilton is an Associate Professor in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is an expert in values in technology design, data ethics, and information ethics
Shilton is involved in a number of research projects. She leads the PERVADE project, which is a large NSF-funded collaboration focused on big data research ethics. She is also a co-Principal Investigator of the newly established $20M NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law and Society (TRAILS), which aims to increase participation in the design, deployment and governance of trustworthy AI systems. Shilton has also published extensively in the areas of data privacy, science and technology studies, and technology ethics. At UMD, she is associated with the Social Data Science Center (SoDa), and is the co-director of the undergraduate major in Social Data Science (SDSC).
