Drew Fagan is Clinical Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Education, Director and Developer of the state’s first-ever Ed.D. in School System Leadership- Specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Dual Language Education Program, and Coordinator of the TESOL Teacher Leadership M.Ed. and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs. His research focuses on multilingual learner equity in P-20 academic policymaking, leadership and administrator development in culturally and linguistically diverse academic settings, and working with multilingual learners who have special education and/or gifted and talented needs. He works closely with Maryland’s Legislature, State Department of Education, and Higher Education Commission to enact change in laws, certification policies, and state-wide assessment and accountability standards connected to multilingual learners' academic equity. He was the 2023 Teacher of the Year for the TESOL International Association and National Geographic Learning, and the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Early Career Award Recipient for Teachers College, Columbia University. He was the 2022-2023 President of the Maryland TESOL Association, where he developed the Association’s state-wide Mentorship Program for TESOL professionals across P-12, adult, and higher education settings. Most recently, he helped lead a coalition towards developing the Credit for All Language Learning (CALL) Act and getting it passed and signed into law in Maryland.
